Reconstructing Zouk (Denver)

Denver, Colorado

Led by: Devon Jerry (Devon and Jerry)

Description

Reconstructing Zouk

In our first weekender that we toured together around the world, we shone the spotlight on the different qualities of microscopic elements in Brazilian Zouk. Reconstructing Zouk will focus on putting together those deconstructed elements and illuminate the patterns that make up Brazilian Zouk!

Saturday will be a summary version of Deconstructing Zouk, with emphasis on frame, torsion, and grounding. In partner dancing, we send and receive energy from both the earth and our partner. The frame is the interface between you and your partner. Grounding is the interface between you and the earth. Being able to modulate your tension, sequencing, and “squish” in both your upper body and lower body helps you give more or take more control in the dance. Weight transfer and frame work together to send and receive information. Day one will be the most detailed “connection” class you’ve ever taken, to the floor, to yourself, and to your partner.

Now that you have a juicy frame and know where your weight is, it’s time to use these tools to move and be moved. In the second portion, we aim to take you on a journey through the evolution of Brazilian Zouk. We will reconstruct movements through the most basic building blocks, finding variation and play between them. You will leave this class with an in-depth understanding of how to move between zouk planta and stepping on the timing. Understanding the history of movements can help us see the evolutionary trajectory of patterns and create with more intention & and freedom.
